A new joint venture, formed of Gleeds, AECOM and Currie & Brown has been named as programme manager for two high-complexity regional hospitals in Piura and Trujillo, northern Peru. Known as the UK Healthcare Alliance (UKHA) the partnership will deliver the schemes, commissioned via a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement for the Programa Nacional de Inversiones en Salud (PRONIS), a Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA) initiative.
Through the G2G, PRONIS is committing to providing international standard healthcare facilities and improving access to medical services for millions of people in the north of Peru. Almost £500 million has been ring-fenced to deliver the Piura and Trujillo hospitals, which will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for high-quality specialised care. Expected to be operational from late 2028, the new hospitals will offer advanced diagnostic and treatment options, boosting local employment and creating a better quality of life for surrounding communities.
A key part of the UKHA’s role will be to establish a project management office (PMO) in Peru’s capital, Lima which will become the hub from which all activities relating to the hospitals are coordinated. The scope of works will extend beyond managing the successful delivery of the Piura and Trujillo facilities, to supporting Peruvian public sector organisations in upskilling the local workforce through knowledge transfer programmes.
To maximise efficiencies and support effective decision-making processes, the UKHA will mandate the use of BIM and other digital technologies on both developments. Tools for project management, reviewing designs, and stakeholder engagement will all be utilised to drive risk reduction, better consider the needs of the end user, and improve overall standards across public services and infrastructure.
Gleeds has extensive experience of working with the Peruvian government thanks to our involvement in the ANIN and Bicentennial Schools programmes. Through this latest partnership, the UKHA will play a central role in the provision of improved access to high-quality healthcare for the people of Piura, Trujillo, and the surrounding areas. These facilities will mean a better quality of life and greater life expectancy for residents, as well as providing an economic boost to the area during construction and in the longer term, once fully operational.
