Peru Reconstruction Programme

Reconstructing Peru – Helping flood-hit Peru rebuild

Collaborating to build resilient infrastructure and communities

The Peru Reconstruction Programme emerged in response to the devastating El Niño Costero event that struck Northern Peru in December 2016. In 2020, Gleeds, joined forces with Mace and Arup to form the UK Delivery Team (UKDT) supporting the Peruvian Government and Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN). This initiative aims to rebuild schools and healthcare facilities and provide flood defences for river basins and cities along the country’s coastal regions.

As part of the UKDT, Gleeds is providing programme management and consultancy services to ANIN. This includes fast-track procurement, bespoke design advice, world-class programme management systems, best practice project management and knowledge transfer initiatives. By sharing our expertise and upskilling local professionals, we’re closing the skills gap and creating a legacy of climate-resilient construction.

The programme brings significant social, economic and environmental benefits to Peru. With $4bn worth of contracts, the initiative demonstrates substantial progress. The integrated flood defence works alone aim to protect 16 million people from future flooding events, fostering resilience and sustainability in Peru's infrastructure.

Hernán Yaipen, head of the ANIN, highlighted the professional work that has been carried out “to embed international standard processes & quality, training and development of officials, contractors and designers to create a new generation of sustainable and safe schools for our children and the following generations”.

What UKDT is doing is leaving behind a legacy. We’re not just diving in there, doing the job, then leaving. We’re embedding skills and creating sustainable practices for local teams to continue delivering infrastructure and maintaining flood systems.
