Last week Gleeds celebrated the inauguration of Yungay Hospital, located in the Ancash region of northern Peru. This marks a significant milestone in the Peru Reconstruction Programme, where, alongside partners Mace and Arup, we’re supporting the Peruvian Government and Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN) in rebuilding critical infrastructure across Peru.
Yungay Hospital is three times larger than its predecessor, and with £76 million of investment, it will greatly improve healthcare for over 50,000 people in the Ancash region. Beyond increasing access to healthcare, Yungay improves the patient experience with its people-centred design, offering a therapeutic garden on the top floor to foster early recovery. It’s also been built with sustainability and resilience front and centre; allowing it to withstand the challenges of Peru’s diverse climate. With an anti-seismic design and advanced drainage systems, the hospital is prepared to handle the challenges of Peru’s diverse climate including earthquakes and heavy rains. These features will ensure that the hospital remains operational in all conditions, providing a stable and resilient healthcare service for the region’s population.
The hospital’s completion isn’t just a local achievement but a model for future healthcare projects across the country. Its modern, people-centred design provides a new model for healthcare that can be replicated in other regions, helping to improve patient outcomes and experiences across Peru.
