In 2010, the Theatre Royal Bath closed for two months whilst its Grade II listed Georgian building, in the heart of the City of Bath UNESCO World Heritage Site, underwent refurbishment.
How did Gleeds help ensure nothing happened that might delay the re-opening night? And how did we ensure the brief was met for £300 K less than forecasted?
Standout performance
Gleeds provided cost management services to achieve best value for the theatre from its most significant investment since an early ‘80s restoration. As one third came from sponsorship and donations, we were particularly careful to manage the cost of:
- Extending the 1865 foyer
- Installing a new lift
- Opening a new stalls bar
- Refurbishing the restaurant and bars
- New stage flooring and stage lighting
- New auditorium cooling/ventilation
Ensuring it would be alright on the night
Our health and safety services were just as important. We prepared a risk register highlighting those items which could have a detrimental effect on the project. Then we agreed a mitigation strategy that included relevant clauses (for example, no hot works without prior authority). We also:
- Included similar clauses to protect the existing fabric
- Ensured appropriate levels of cover and apportionment of risk
- Appointed a committed local contractor who understood the deadline’s importance
