Andrew Irving serves as the Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa at Gleeds. As the bridge between these regions and the UK, Andrew’s role includes reporting to Group on behalf of ME and Africa, providing support to Regional and Country Directors on strategic planning, business development, strengthening client relationships, and managing finances.
A typical day for Andrew involves meetings with Directors, Corporate and Sector leads and Clients, assisting with financial forecasts, business growth and client and sector engagement, and aligning regional activities with Gleeds’ broader strategic goals. Andrew is motivated by enjoyment in work and meaningful success both personally and for those around him. This may come about through satisfied clients or supporting his team’s professional and personal growth and achievements.
The construction industry has always been close to Andrew's heart, with both his father and grandfather working in the sector. This legacy, combined with his own love for travel and exploring different cultures, made his choice of career in a global business a natural fit. Working on projects worldwide with the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office over the past 20 years has further fuelled his passion for international work, something he feels fortunate to have experienced and continue at Gleeds.
Reflecting on his 42-year journey with Gleeds, Andrew has most appreciated the company’s strong reputation, longstanding history, family culture and global reach.
I joined Gleeds over four decades ago because it was a well-established strong consultancy with a growing global presence. The potential for personal development in a dynamic consultancy was very appealing.
Andrew's proudest achievements in Gleeds include his appointment as joint Managing Director for the UK in 2020 and his involvement in setting up and growing the Oxford office whilst always being part of a hugely successful business at Gleeds Tunbridge Wells.
His advice to new joiners?
Get involved actively in making connections within the business. There is so much to do and a wealth of knowledge here - never say no, approach people, and work positively.
Outside of work, Andrew enjoys travelling, live music, being outside and watching sports. If he hadn’t pursued a career in construction, he envisions himself doing something travel related or perhaps possibly some aspect of the legal profession.
