Conservation and enhancement of our heritage influences all our lives - from major restoration projects, urban regeneration lead schemes, to local community initiatives. Heritage is a theme which cuts across many sectors including Culture and Learning, Environment and Industry. At Gleeds, we recognise the importance of heritage in the built environment and the range of specialist skills required to deliver these complex projects.

Heritage projects include working on historic buildings, buildings in a historic context (for example new buildings next to historic buildings) and cultural buildings (churches, museums and galleries).  Adapting and altering iconic (and listed) late 20th Century buildings also has its challenges.

The restoration and preservation of listed buildings present a whole range of challenges not associated with new build projects – for example, listed building consents; conservation plans; sourcing of materials; specialist trades; increased risk of hidden costs; and often involves projects with multiple stakeholders and external funders.

Gleeds offer a range of services to guide the client through each stage of the process. The heritage sector is like no other. Our experience of listed buildings and specialist building techniques allow our specialists to evaluate risk, set realistic programmes and establish sound budgets - all of which are especially important for projects in a field notorious for unforeseen extras and cost overruns.

In addition, we can provide complementary or stand-alone services such as Project Management, Project Monitoring, Building Surveying and also have dedicated funding advisors used to working with bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, and equivalent bodies overseas. We also have specialist tax advisors who can assist in assessing and minimising tax liabilities.
